Situated at a prominent part of the Sydney landscape this new playground development at Sydney Olympic Park uses simple shapes to create striking functionality and beauty. Designed as a unique roofing structure the flower shaped panels provide practical cover to the building below as well as an aesthetic element. Management of the design was crucial to the engineering of fabric and steel elements. Although MakMax were given a design brief and overall aesthetic goal, brining these features to fruition was the work of our in house engineers.
The high level of inter disciplinary cooperation was something of a challenge during the design, fabrication and installation phases of the project, strong communication between, engineers, architects, the end client and . Challenges that were well worth the effort according to our client whom is very impressed with the end result.
Complexities in the steel design also required special attention. The rolling component of the steelwork alone required specialist engineering attention and a strict installation method statement in order to assemble the large rolled members on site. These large steel members sit on 21 groups of HD bolts, all in perfect alignment. With these two elements, the footing and steel, out of the way installation of the fabric panels was relatively simple.
Our client is very happy with the result, although the working steel and fabric models were created and executed by us, the finished product is an exact likeness of the architect’s original vision.
