Shaded areas are essential for public aquatic centres, providing visitors with protection from the sun while enhancing comfort and usability. As part of the redevelopment of the Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool, Glen Eira City Council incorporated a range of bright, vibrant, and innovative shade structures to complement the facility’s mix of classic and modern features.

The Brief

MakMax Australia was engaged to bring these shade structure concepts to life, working in collaboration with the architect, Co-Op Studio and ADCO, the project’s nominated construction firm. From initial consultation to installation, MakMax provided a range of shade solutions tailored to different areas of the aquatic centre, ensuring sun-safe and architecturally unique public spaces.

The Materials

To enhance comfort and sun protection across different areas of the Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool, a variety of shade structures were installed, each designed to suit its specific function while contributing to the centre’s vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

  • Architectural Umbrellas: Ten MakMax Centra CS32 Architectural Umbrellas with durable Serge Ferrari 502 (Buttercup) PVC canopies, providing bright and stylish shade for poolside seating areas.
  • BBQ Table & Seating Shade: Three custom-designed square shade structures using Mehler FR700N PVC, offering sun protection for visitors enjoying the BBQ and picnic area of the complex.
  • Waterplay Area Shade: A large 18-metre round shade structure using Gale Pacific Heavy 430 HDPE (Natural) fabric, ensuring a cool and safe environment over the children’s water-play area.
  • Pool-End Shade: A 634 sqm shade canopy using Gale Pacific Heavy 430 HDPE (Steel Grey), delivering expansive sun coverage over the turn-end of the pool for swimmers and spectators .

The Result

The revitalised Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool is now a premier aquatic centre for the residents of Carnegie, Victoria. With carefully designed shade structures, visitors can enjoy the outdoor facilities while being protected from the harsh Melbourne summer sun. By combining architectural innovation with functional sun protection, the shade solutions help create a comfortable and inviting community space for generations to come.
