The Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium project involved the manufacturing, fabrication, and installation of a PVC membrane grandstand canopy to provide shade and weather protection for fans attending regional sporting events.
Situated in the regional New South Wales town of Mudgee, the stadium opened its doors in early 2012, serving as a versatile venue for Rugby League, Union, Football, and other events. The centerpiece of the stadium is its multi-million dollar grandstand, offering seating for over 1,000 spectators undercover, along with corporate suites, coaches’ boxes, broadcast, and media rooms.
The Brief
MakMax worked with Robertson & Marks, the design firm behind the project, to collaborated on a design with a unique approach to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Truss rafters were incorporated to increase internal volume while effectively directing water runoff. This design innovation, coupled with strategically placed columns providing drainage outlets, not only ensures practicality but also enhances the visual appeal of the stadium.
The canopy design seamlessly integrates with the seating layout below, offering an inviting atmosphere and an enjoyable experience for spectators. Truss arches were utilised to optimise steel tonnage and minimize roof deflections under load, ensuring structural integrity and longevity.
The Materials
The selected material for the canopy is Serge Ferrari 1002T2 PVC with PVDF coating. This high-quality material offers excellent resistance to airborne pollutants, UV radiation, and harsh weather conditions. The PVDF coating, composed of fluoride, carbon, and hydrogen, provides added durability while allowing for economical manufacturing and welding processes.
The white/translucent color scheme enhances light transmission, creating a comfortable environment for spectators while reducing glare. With a light transmission rate of 8%, the canopy strikes a balance between natural illumination and UV protection.
The Result
The completion of the Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium canopy project in early 2011 marked a significant milestone in the enhancement of sports infrastructure in the Mudgee region. The clever design, coupled with high-quality materials, resulted in a grandstand canopy that not only met the functional requirements but also elevateed the aesthetic appeal of the stadium.
Spectators still enjoy events in comfort and style, shielded from the elements while experiencing uninterrupted views of the action. With its robust construction and durable materials, the canopy is poised to serve the community for years to come, ensuring that Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium remains a destination for regional sporting events and gatherings.
