Completed in January 2025, the new Futsal Court Cover at the Islamic College of Brisbane provides all-weather protection for the school’s futsal court. With a design based on MakMax’s TensoSport Canopy, this school COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) offers much-needed shade and shelter for students and staff alike and enhances the school’s outdoor sports and recreation program.
The Brief
The school required a durable sports court canopy to protect their futsal field from the harsh Queensland sun while complementing the existing shade structures on campus.
Given the court’s location between other buildings, the installation of the school shade structure posed significant logistical challenges that required expert planning and execution.
The Materials
The 39m x 24m shade structure is built with a robust Hot Dipped Galvanized steel frame, ensuring long-term structural integrity and resistance to the elements.
The canopy features 1040 square metres of Polyfab Xtra HDPE Shade Mesh, chosen in a bold and striking bronze colour to match the school’s existing shade solutions. The high-quality shade mesh provides excellent UV protection while allowing for air circulation, keeping the playing area cool and comfortable.
The Result
Despite the complexities of the installation, including the use of a 100-tonne crane to lift steel sections over the administration building, the project was successfully completed over the December/January school holidays. The new sports court canopy was ready just in time for the first day of the school year, ensuring students could immediately benefit from the enhanced playing environment.
The school’s Facilities Manager praised the outcome, stating, “The new shade structure has been well received by both our staff and students, and we appreciate the work that went into it.”
With this new school shade structure in place, the Islamic College of Brisbane has significantly improved its outdoor sporting facilities, providing year-round protection and comfort for students engaging in futsal and other activities.
