The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Roof is a great example of cable supported membrane roof. Constructed as part of major stadium redevelopment for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the ridged PTFE membrane roof floats like a lotus flower over the stadium seating area, protecting spectators from the sun.
The Brief
A truly global achievement, the membrane roof was installed my MakMax Australia, with Birdair (Taiyo Kogyo’s US division) assisting with the fabrication of the PTFE panels.
MakMak worked with VSL India to install the cable grid supporting the membrane roof, with cables manufactured by German cable manufacture PFEIFER Worldwide.
Overall construction of the stadium was carried out by Shapporji Pallonji & Co Ltd.
The Concept
The 88 fabric panels are supported on a grid of 90 cables, radiating outward from an inner tension ring. The alternating ridge and valley cables extending to the outer steel ring, creating a floating crown above the stadium seating area.
The Materials
The Result
The Taiyo Kogyo Group of companies boast an unrivaled portfolio of stadium roofing across the globe – with the floating lotus-flower of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Roof a wonderful example of membrane stadium architecture.
