Jupiter’s Casino PTFE Atrium
Project Details
Location: Gold Coast, QLD
Completion Date: December 2016
Size: 1560 sqm
Fabric: PTFE - Chukoh FGT800 & FGT 800LT8
The Jupiter’s Casino PTFE Atrium project was initiated to replace a membrane atrium originally installed almost 30 years ago in the mid-1980s. The project brief was to upgrade the existing atrium roof with a custom fabric atrium structure. This new structure incorporated varying translucencies to deliver fabric patterns that would interact dynamically with both artificial and natural lighting, enhancing the visual experience within the atrium.
The Brief
Our scope of work involved the design, supply, and installation of replacement membranes for the atrium structure, as well as the Northern section of the walkway and the Southern entrance. This included working with structural steel components that had been in place for decades.
Given the location of the Jupiter’s Casino (now known as The Star Casino) in the heart of the Gold Coast and its status as a 24-hour venue with constant public access, the project required careful planning. Detailed installation plans and stringent safety measures were crucial to ensure that work on the atrium roof structure could be carried out without disrupting the ongoing operations of the casino.
The Materials
The original membrane structure, installed over 30 years ago, presented unique challenges. Our team had to devise innovative solutions for fixing and perimeter details due to the evolution of fabric technology and engineering standards since the 1980s.
The fabric patterning for the PTFE Atrium had to leverage modern advancements, with the introduction of multiple translucency fabric types that would allow the atrium to respond differently to varying light levels throughout the day. This was essential for creating an architectural design that would complement the casino’s aesthetic while enhancing the guest experience.
The two types of PTFE chosen for this large atrium were Chukoh Skytop FGT800 and FGT800LT8. Both versions of the Skytop fabric are highly durable, with FGT800 offering 13% translucency for a bright, naturally lit environment, while FGT800LT8 provides 8% translucency, balancing light diffusion with enhanced solar protection, ensuring a comfortable and visually appealing space throughout the day.
Working with an existing structure that had been engineered and installed in the mid-80s required careful consideration. The steel framework, which had withstood three decades of wear and tear, needed repairs and, in some cases, replacement to ensure the new membrane structure would perform to the highest standards.
The Result
Despite the complexities of the project, including the challenges posed by the existing structure and the need to work within a fully operational, 24-hour venue, the project was completed successfully. The client’s expectations were met, and the end result has been well received.
The new fabric structure within Jupiter’s Casino PTFE Atrium creates a stunning interplay of colour and translucency, responding to both natural daylight and artificial lighting to produce a captivating visual effect. This project demonstrates the capability of fabric architecture to transform spaces through thoughtful design and advanced material technology.
