The Kawana Waters Hotel project, undertaken by our distribution partner, Versatile Structures, required an all-weather, fire-proof, non-combustible canopy. The design aimed to emulate ocean waves, attaching the structure to a deck overlooking a marina, and weatherproofing it against the hotel infrastructure. The project was completed with integrated guttering and retractable blinds along the perimeter.
The Brief
MakMax Australia’s role in the Kawana Waters Hotel project was to provide engineering expertise and specialised technical assistance for the PTFE membrane required for the non-combustible canopy. We collaborated with Versatile Structures to adapt our Pavilion Modular Shade Structure to meet the project brief.
This project showcases the adaptability of the MakMax Pavilion Shade Structure. Based on the Pavilion PS50, the custom structure was created by linking six PS50 (5m x 5m) modular shade structures together. Each repeatable conical section was modified to form a single, unified 30m structure with a continuous PTFE canopy.
The Materials
The roofing material had to be non-combustible. Chukoh FGT600 PTFE fabric was proposed as a suitable roofing material that could conform to the architectural conical shape while adhering to strict building codes related to fire spread.
To meet the fire engineer’s specifications, Versatile Structures worked with MakMax to develop a performance solution using PTFE fabric. Approval for PTFE use required extensive collaboration with the client, architect, structural engineer, and fire engineer.
The linear edge of the structure provided a base for Versatile Structures to install a roll-down blind system for cold weather. Lighting and heating units were also attached to the internal steelwork, enhancing the comfort of hotel patrons during colder weather.
The Result
Versatile Structures managed the Kawana Waters Hotel Modular Shade Structure project from the inception with the architect, all the way through to the installation and successful project completion. MakMax was proud to collaborate with the engineering, drafting and fabrication the PTFE membrane for the structure.
Despite the challenges of installing over wooden decking with limited access to the water, the Versatile Structures team managed the task brilliantly, resulting in a highly satisfied client.
Versatile Structures received two awards for the Kawana Waters Structure at the 2024 Specialised Textiles Association Awards for Excellence:
- Winner: Tension Structures, less than 250sqm
- Special Commendation: Blinds & Awnings Commercial, External
