Designed to protect departing passengers from the sun and equatorial downpours, the Minute Stop zones (Libreville Airport Passenger Set Down) at Libreville Airport in Gabon are protected by two opposing PVC canopies.
The Brief
The MakMax European team at Taiyo Europe was commissioned for the architectural design, delivery and installation of the Libreville Airport Passenger set down canopies, and as another example of global cooperation between Taiyo Kogyo departments, MakMAx Australia joined the project as steel and membrane engineering and fabrication partners.
The Materials
A total of 30 tons of structural steel was employed to create the strong cantilever structures.
High-translucency Mehler Texnologies FR1000N PVC membrane was used on the canopies. This architectural fabric features a unique nanostructures lacquered surface, making it ideal for the hot and humid tropical environment. The Nano coating reduces surface energy, allowing rainfall to run smoothly off the surface of the membrane, carrying any dust or dirt particles with it.
The Result
The result is impressive, the lightweight and elegant curved arches reach out over the roadway and provide cover for passengers. The two opposite canopies are also linked by two pedestrian crossing covers.
