Mt. Gambier Aquatic Centre Walkway was completed in October 2022 as part of the redevelopment of the Aquatic Centre into the Wulanda Recreation & Convention Centre.
The 250 square metre tensile membrane and wood finish walkway adds a distinctive touch to the centre’s aesthetic curb appeal.
The Brief
The redevelopment project was designed by project architects, Design Inc and Co.Op Studio, with major works carried out by Badge Constructions. MakMax Australia’s Scope of Works was to engineer and pattern the tensile membrane elements of the external walkway. The objective was to construct a durable external walkway that adhered to stringent fire safety standards, ultimately enhancing the overall safety and functionality of the entire complex.
The Materials
Incorporating a combination of PVC and PTFE sections, the 250 square meter walkway roof was designed to meet the building’s fire safety requirements. The PTFE section covered the entrance area, guaranteeing superior fire performance, while the remaining walkway was adorned with PVC, a robust yet cost-effective alternative.
With much better fire performance characteristics, a PTFE was chosen to cover the entrance area. The rest of the open-sided walkway was clad in PVC, still a highly durable membrane, but a more affordable option to PTFE.
The walkway was finished by Badge with a wooden facia around the perimeter of the walkway, providing a striking and aesthetically pleasing contrast of materials – offering a visually pleasing experience for visitors, right from the moment they arrive.
The Result
The successful collaboration MakMax Australia and Badge Constructions on the Mt. Gambier Aquatic Centre Walkway has created a standout feature for the new Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre. The selection of high-quality materials, coupled with expert craftsmanship, not only met the stringent fire safety requirements but also contributed to an inviting and visually captivating experience for all visitors, setting an impressive tone from the moment of arrival.
