The 17 MakMax Centra Umbrellas installed at Shute Harbour Marine Terminal are a stunning addition to the new outdoor seated area of the refurbished facility.

The Brief

The Shute Harbour Restoration Project set out to rebuild the marine terminal into a world-class commercial facility after it was extensively damaged during Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie in March 2017. The $63.5 million restoration project incorporated new pontoons, terminal ticketing, dining and bar, retail space, carpark and recreational fishing jetting.

The Whitsunday Regional Council worked together with Airlie Sail and Shade Solutions to design an outdoor alfresco dining area with plenty of seating and umbrellas for visitor and tourists. MakMax Architectural Umbrellas were chosen for this project for they are designed, engineered and fabricated for Australian conditions.   Shute Harbour Marina knows and trusts the quality of MakMax umbrellas because the facility has been using MakMax umbrellas since 2005.

The Concept

This Shute Harbour Marine Terminal project called for a custom umbrella design as the client requested a series of small umbrellas approx. 3 metre width which was outside the scope of our standard umbrella sizes.  Our in-house team of experts designed and fabricated a custom Centra Hexagonal 3m design (CH35 Umbrella).

Airlie Sail and Shade Solutions installed a series of 12 x CH35 Umbrellas at Shute Harbour Marine Terminal in late 2021, with an additional 5 x CH35 Umbrellas installed in early 2022.

The Materials

MakMax Architectural Umbrellas come in a range of shapes, colours and sizes, providing greater flexibility to design a unique and attractive shade solution for the  outdoor dining area. The CH35 Centra Umbrellas are made from Serge-Ferrari PVC fabric in “Camel” colour with a contrasting “Paperbark” coated steel frame to create a strong visual presence that matched the aesthetic of the new facility.

The Result

The Shute Harbour Marine Terminal reopened to the public in mid December 2021. The new facility incorporates dining and bar options for tourists and visitors, including an outdoor dining space overlooking the marina.  The 17 MakMax Architectural Umbrellas make this new outdoor dining area really stand out, providing plenty of shade options for visitors as they the amazing views.  The Agent and Whitsunday Regional Council were happy with the product and service.
