The Sydney Airport Valet Canopies were built as part of Sydney Airport’s major redevelopment of its domestic carparks, creating a new luxury valet parking drop-off and pick-up area on Keith Smith Drive. Reclaiming space from existing warehouses, this revamped area features two MakMax Australia-designed TensoCar Full Cover canopies that provide drop-off, pick-up, and vehicle storage for Sydney Airport’s Valet Parking Service.

The Brief

Designed to create both aesthetic appeal and functional coverage, the project required two barrel vault structures positioned at right angles to each other. The canopies cover the valet area’s entry and exit points, creating a protected and visually inviting environment for valet customers.

MakMax Australia was engaged to design, fabricate, and install the steel structure, fabric membrane, and HD bolts for the two large canopies. The project’s head contractor, Seymour Whyte, completed the column footings as part of the larger site redevelopment.

The Materials

For a long-lasting, low-maintenance finish in Sydney Airport’s high-traffic environment, MakMax proposed PTFE fabric for the Sydney Airport Valet Canopies. This high-performance architectural membrane is ideal for membrane structures in heavy-traffic areas, such as airports, due to its inert nature, which provides resistance to chemical degradation from pollutants. Its low-surface tension also encourages self-cleaning as rain naturally washes away airborne dust and contaminants, ensuring the canopy remains bright and clean over time.

The Result

The twin canopy structures spans a combined area of over 3,000 sqm, with the pick-up canopy measuring 39m x 14m, and the drop-off canopy at an impressive 82.5m x 28m.

The curved barrel-vault design provides ample covered space for valet operations while contributing a contemporary look to Sydney Airport’s valet parking area.

Designed for resilience, the PTFE-covered Sydney Airport Valet Canopies enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the space, offering a premium experience for travellers and a durable solution for the airport’s valet parking service.
