Sydney 2000 Olympics Membrane Structures

In the years leading up to the Sydney Olympics in 2000, MakMax was approached to produce a number of tensile membrane structures for the upcoming Olympic games.

The Sydney 2000 Olympics organising committee wanted structures that would provide shade to visitors and spectators of the games, while also being visually striking and aesthetically appealing. They also required shade structures that would serve the many participants of the games at various locations around the Olympic village and stadiums. With sponsorship such a big part of the games, many structures featured sponsor’s logos and branding.

MakMax constructed many tensile membrane features of what was then called Homebush Stadium (now known as Stadium Australia), including the VIP Entrance and the Wind breaks (fabric facade). Other shade solutions around Sydney Olympic Park include the Sydney Olympic Amphitheater. A membrane roof for the host TV station’s Olympic broadcasting building was also completed.

Numerous smaller projects around Sydney we built in the leadup to the games, including architectural umbrellas in Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and the Olympic village.

With MakMax involved with the design, engineering and fabrication and installation of over 20 unique structures, we helped to ensure that Sydney look her very best for visitors to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, as well to the global audience tuning in to the watch the games.
