The Point Boston Peninsula Club is an iconic ocean-front venue which is the focal point on the coast of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, a $450 million environmentally sustainable residential community. The custom-designed membrane roof and unique “glass-house” design creates a natural dining experience overlooking the spectacular coastal views.
The Brief
The Point Boston Peninsula club house facility was part of larger development in the area that included a hotel and state of the art function centre. As the focal point of the development the architect’s vision was to design a building that complimented the stunning coastline while preserving the natural heritage of the peninsula.
Lightweight and flexible, tensile membrane offered the architect great creative freedom to design a unique and visually stunning roof structure that would be equally impressive in daylight or under artistic lighting. The flexible nature, durability and sustainable qualities of tensile membrane made it the perfect fit for this project.
The Materials
The architect specified PTFE fabric for its sustainable qualities, such as minimal resource use, the ability to transmit up to 17.5% of sunlight to lower electricity costs, and the longevity of the product.
The unique undulating awning framing of the Point Boston Peninsula Club mimics the waves that can be seen through the floor to ceiling glass walls. The two conical umbrella structures that make up the main roof canopy create maximum visual impact, adding to the buildings overall look. The natural light illuminating the ceiling gives the patrons a whole new viewing experience that overlooks the spectacular peninsula coastline.
The Result
The result is a unique and award-winning fabric roof that creates a comfortable experience for The Point Boston Peninsula Club patrons. MakMax Australia was recognized for their technical skills, innovation and design excellence for this incredible tensile structure. This project won an Excellence Award at IFAI International Achievement Awards 2009 and an Outstanding Achievement at the STA Australian Textiles Industry Awards 2009.
