MakMax Australia was engaged to design and install the Woodcroft College School COLA shade structure in Adelaide, providing much-needed shade for Junior School students. The structure, measuring 25m x 12m, was designed to cover a non-standard play space and allow for an offset from the adjacent building to accommodate existing services.
The Brief
Working closely with Swanbury Penglase Architects, we integrated the MakMax TensoCOLA design into their broader campus master plan. The final structure features a sleek barrel vault arched canopy, supported by a robust steel frame. The steel structure is coated with a multi-layer architectural paint system, finished in Signal White for both durability and aesthetic appeal.
The Materials
The 300sqm canopy is fabricated from Mehler FR900N PVC, a high-performance material chosen for its strength, flexibility, and UV resistance, ensuring long-lasting protection from the elements. The canopy’s clean lines and white colour offer a modern look that complements the school’s environment.
In addition to shade, the design incorporates functional elements such as white Colorbond gutters and PVC downpipes, which efficiently channel rainwater from the canopy into the existing stormwater system. This integration minimises water run-off and supports sustainable water management on site.
The Result
MakMax worked alongside head contractor Mossop Construction to ensure the timely delivery of the project, coordinating closely with all stakeholders to meet the school’s requirements. The Woodcroft College School COLA provides a comfortable, sheltered space for students to play and gather, enhancing the school’s facilities with a durable and aesthetically pleasing shade solution.
The TensoCola structure at Woodcroft is not the first MakMak Australia shade structure at the school. Adelaide Shade Solutions installed a series of architectural umbrellas in 2010 and 2013; including a cluster of four hexagonal umbrellas (2 x CH57 and 2 x LH57), as well as seven other Centra square umbrellas of various sizes.
